Japanese contemporary artist known for her obsessive, immersive works featuring polka dots, infinity nets, and mirror rooms that explore infinity, self-obliteration, and cosmic repetition. She moved to New York in 1958 and became part of the avant-garde scene alongside Warhol and Oldenburg, pioneering soft sculpture, environmental installations, and happenings. After a mental health crisis, she voluntarily checked into a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo in 1977, where she has lived and worked ever since. Now in her 90s, she is one of the world's most influential and commercially successful living artists, with exhibitions drawing millions worldwide.
