German politician and physician who has served as President of the European Commission since 2019, the first woman to hold the position. Before leading the EU, she served in Angela Merkel's cabinet for 14 years, including as Germany's first female Defence Minister (2013-2019). A mother of seven who earned a medical degree from Hannover Medical School and a Master's in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene, she led the EU's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the European Green Deal, and Europe's response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
