Taiwanese politician and legal scholar who served as President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2016 to 2024, the first woman to hold the office. A member of the Democratic Progressive Party, she holds law degrees from National Taiwan University, Cornell, and the London School of Economics. During her two terms, she navigated rising tensions with mainland China while strengthening Taiwan's semiconductor industry and international partnerships. She legalized same-sex marriage in 2019, making Taiwan the first country in Asia to do so. Her measured, firm approach to cross-strait relations earned her global recognition.
