American animal scientist, author, and autism spokesperson who transformed livestock handling practices in the United States. Diagnosed with autism in 1950, at a time when her parents were advised to institutionalize her, she went on to earn a PhD in animal science from the University of Illinois. Her ability to think in pictures, which she attributes to her autism, led her to design humane livestock handling systems now used in facilities processing over half of all cattle in North America. She was one of the first autistic people to publicly document the insights her condition provides. Named to Time magazine's 100 most influential people in 2010, she is a professor at Colorado State University and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
