Moroccan former hurdler who won the inaugural women's 400m hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, becoming the first woman from a Muslim-majority nation, the first Moroccan, the first Arab woman, and the first African woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Her victory was celebrated across Morocco and the Islamic world as a breakthrough for women in sport. After retiring from competition, she served as Morocco's Minister of Sports and Youth and joined the International Olympic Committee. She has been a vocal advocate for women's participation in athletics across the Middle East and Africa.
