Sports Europe 20th

Romanian gymnast who, at age 14, became the first person in Olympic history to be awarded a perfect 10.0 score in gymnastics at the 1976 Montreal Olympics — a moment so unprecedented the scoreboard couldn't display it and showed 1.00 instead. She earned seven perfect 10s at those Games, winning three gold medals. She added two more golds at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In 1989, she defected from Communist Romania in a dramatic border crossing to Hungary. She now lives in the United States and works with numerous charitable organizations. Her name remains synonymous with gymnastic perfection.
