Serbian performance artist who has pushed the boundaries of the body, endurance, and the relationship between performer and audience for over five decades. Her work 'The Artist Is Present' (2010) at MoMA, where she sat silently across from visitors for 736 hours, became a cultural phenomenon. Earlier pieces tested extreme physical limits: in 'Rhythm 0' (1974), she offered herself as a passive object to the audience with 72 objects including a loaded gun. Often called the 'grandmother of performance art,' she established the Marina Abramović Institute to preserve and develop long-durational performance work.
