Canadian author and literary critic whose work spans novels, poetry, short fiction, and essays across more than six decades. Best known for 'The Handmaid's Tale' (1985), a dystopian novel about patriarchal theocracy that became a cultural touchstone and acclaimed TV series, she has published over 50 books. She won the Booker Prize twice (2000, 2019) and has been a perennial Nobel Prize candidate. Her fiction consistently explores power, gender, technology, and environmental destruction with prescient intelligence.
