American engineer, physician, and NASA astronaut who became the first African American woman to travel in space when she flew aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour in September 1992. Before joining NASA, she served in the Peace Corps as a medical officer in Sierra Leone and Liberia. She holds degrees in chemical engineering and African American studies from Stanford, and an MD from Cornell. After leaving NASA in 1993, she founded the Jemison Group to develop science and technology for daily life and the 100 Year Starship project to make interstellar travel possible.
