American politician and attorney who served as the 49th Vice President of the United States from 2021 to 2025, the first woman, first Black person, and first South Asian person to hold the office. Previously, she served as U.S. Senator from California and as California's Attorney General — the first woman and first person of color in that role. The daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, she built her career in law enforcement before entering electoral politics. She was the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 2024.
