Computer Science North America 21st

Canadian-American computer scientist and digital activist who founded the Algorithmic Justice League to challenge bias in artificial intelligence systems. As a researcher at the MIT Media Lab, her thesis project Gender Shades uncovered significant racial and gender bias in commercial facial recognition services from Microsoft, IBM, and Amazon, prompting corporate policy changes and legislative attention worldwide. A Rhodes Scholar and Fulbright Fellow, her TED talk on algorithmic bias has over one million views. She coined the term 'the coded gaze' to describe how AI systems can encode existing inequalities, and her spoken word piece 'AI, Ain't I A Woman?' has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Barbican Centre, London.
