German Benedictine abbess, composer, philosopher, mystic, and polymath of the 12th century — one of the best-documented medieval women. She composed over 70 liturgical songs and the morality play 'Ordo Virtutum,' wrote extensively on natural history and medicine, and recorded elaborate mystical visions in texts like 'Scivias.' She founded two monasteries and corresponded with popes, emperors, and bishops as an equal. Pope Benedict XVI named her a Doctor of the Church in 2012, making her one of only four women to hold that title. Her work spans music, theology, botany, and early holistic medicine.
