Israeli politician and stateswoman who served as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974, making her the first woman to lead the country and one of the first female heads of government in the modern world. Born in Kyiv and raised in Milwaukee, she emigrated to British Palestine in 1921. She served as Labor Minister and Foreign Minister before becoming PM. She led Israel during the traumatic Yom Kippur War of 1973, after which she resigned amid criticism of intelligence failures. Known as the 'Iron Lady' before Thatcher, she was a formidable negotiator and a foundational figure in Israeli statehood.
