American artist recognized as the 'Mother of American Modernism,' known for her large-scale paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. She was one of the first American artists to practice pure abstraction and challenged the male-dominated art world throughout her seven-decade career. Her relationship with photographer Alfred Stieglitz helped launch her career, though she later sought independence in the desert Southwest. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.
