French virologist who co-discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS. In 1983, working at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, she identified the retrovirus in lymph node tissue from an AIDS patient — a discovery that enabled diagnostic testing and treatment development. She shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Luc Montagnier. She spent decades advocating for access to antiretroviral treatments in developing countries and served as president of the International AIDS Society. Her work saved millions of lives by making HIV diagnosis and management possible.
