Chemistry Europe 21st

French microbiologist and biochemist who co-developed the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing tool with Jennifer Doudna. Her research on the bacterial immune system of Streptococcus pyogenes led to the key insight that a small RNA molecule guides the Cas9 enzyme to cut specific DNA sequences. She shared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, making her and Doudna the first all-female team to share a science Nobel. She directs the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens in Berlin. Her work has opened the door to treating genetic diseases at their source.
