British-Zimbabwean novelist who received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature at age 87, the oldest person to win the literature prize. Born in Iran and raised in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), she drew on her African experience in her early work, particularly 'The Grass Is Singing' (1950). Her masterwork 'The Golden Notebook' (1962) is considered a landmark of feminist literature. Over a 60-year career, she published more than 50 books spanning realism, science fiction, autobiography, and Sufi philosophy. She was a fierce critic of apartheid and was banned from South Africa and Rhodesia for her political activism.
