Brazilian politician and economist who served as the 36th President of Brazil from 2011 to 2016, the first woman to hold the office. As a young woman, she joined the armed resistance against Brazil's military dictatorship and was imprisoned and tortured for nearly three years. She later built a career in public administration and energy policy before being chosen as Lula da Silva's successor. She was impeached in 2016 on charges of fiscal irregularities, a process she and her supporters called a political coup. She subsequently served as president of the New Development Bank (BRICS bank).
