Filipino politician who served as the 11th President of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992, becoming Asia's first female president and a global icon of peaceful democratic revolution. After her husband, opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr., was assassinated in 1983, she emerged as the figurehead of opposition to the Marcos dictatorship. The People Power Revolution of 1986, a mass nonviolent uprising, swept her to power. She restored democratic institutions, promulgated a new constitution, and survived seven coup attempts. Time magazine named her Woman of the Year in 1986.
