Ukrainian-born Brazilian novelist and short story writer considered one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century in Portuguese. Her family fled anti-Jewish pogroms to Brazil when she was an infant. Her debut novel 'Near to the Wild Heart' (1943) was a sensation, and works like 'The Passion According to G.H.' (1964) and 'The Hour of the Star' (1977) pushed narrative form toward philosophical and existential exploration of consciousness, identity, and language itself. Her prose is often compared to Woolf and Kafka for its interior intensity. She was rediscovered internationally in the 2010s through new English translations.
