Music North America 20th

American jazz singer whose vocal style, phrasing, and emotional depth transformed popular music. Born Eleanora Fagan, she overcame a childhood of poverty and abuse to become one of the most influential vocalists in jazz history. Her 1939 recording of 'Strange Fruit,' a protest against lynching, is considered one of the first major songs of the Civil Rights Movement. Her interpretive genius could transform ordinary songs into profound emotional experiences. She struggled with addiction and was harassed by federal narcotics agents. Despite a career spanning only about 26 years, her influence on vocal jazz remains immeasurable.
